There was no denying that Anderson was in a bad way. Tormented by visions from her past and seeing everyone around her as the terrifying masked figure she wasn't capable of much more than writhing around her padded cell. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
Sinking deeper into her own mind she found herself on a vision quest trying to make some sense of what was going on. Encountering a scared young girl named Cassie she sensed this was the key to it all and followed the girl deeper into the dream. Meanwhile back in the real world ....
Confronted by an army of the masked men Anderson finally realised the truth. The girl was her as a child and the masked men were images of the "monster" who had abused her in her youth. Anderson gave the girl the strength to fight back and symbolically defeat her fear after all the years it had lain buried in her subconscious.
While the truth may set you free it can also be ugly. After her psychic odyssey Anderson at last remembered everything. When she had been Cassie she had been abused regularly by "the monster". Unconsciously using her innate psychic powers she had tried to wish the monster to death. Instead it was her father who had died and she had become catatonic from grief and guilt being to young to realize her father and the monster were the same man. When the Judges investigated they realised the little girl was a very powerful psychic. She was given into Psi-Division's care and they restored her by using a psychic block to bury the memory of what she had done. It was very effective but it was noted at the time if her memories started emerging there would be trouble as they hadn't dealt with her problems, merely surpressed the trauma. Fortunately while it was touch and go for a time Anderson was strong enough to face her demons down in the end. What Psi-Division never knew was this hadn't resulted from the blow to the head. Instead, after that she had encountered a powerful psychic who wished to be left in peace. In trying to block Anderson's memory of seeing her Hope inadvertantly had shattered Anderson's original mindblock so the memories started to resurface. A lot of stuff happened to Anderson after that included a resignation and eventual restoration to the ranks of Justice Department. But getting back to our specific theme here's Anderson trapped inside the mind of a dead man by a powerful psychic. She entered the late and unlamented Diablo's mind to read his memories before they faded only to discover it was a trap set by Nikodemus.
Nikodemus was an old adversary who had managed to possess Anderson's rookie Evayne. He was planning to trick the Judges into destroying the body Anderson was trapped in then make himself a power in Psi division by using the Rookie's body to infiltrate the organization. Too bad for him Anderson managed to jump ship before the body was destroyed. Too bad for Rookie Evayne they couldn't come up with any way to restore her mind so Nikodemus remained firmly in control of it. For all the good it'll do him (or her).
